Montana's Baby-Friendly Designated Hospitals

  • A global program launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 1991;
  • ​Encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding and mother/baby bonding;
  • ​ It recognizes and awards birthing facilities who successfully implement the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding​ and the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes​.
  • Baby-Friendly promotes the following 10 steps to support breastfeeding: - train staff in breastfeeding -  encourage rooming in - promote skin to skin after delivery - offer prenatal breastfeeding education - teach breastfeeding skills and benefits - help with breastfeeding support after discharge - and much more!
